THE JOHN MAYER “Crash 2” Tribute Stratocaster
History
In 1997, Eric Clapton met street artist John "Crash" Matos and was inspired by his artwork, a mix of abstract and graffiti based street-art. Eric had "Crash" paint one of his unfinished Stratocaster bodies in 2000 and "CRASH 1" (also known as the "Over the Rainbow" Stratocaster) was born.
It was later that guitarist John Mayer also met “Crash” and, having seen the impact of Clapton’s stunning guitars, which the artist had painted, Mayer decided to ask “Crash” if he would finish one of his Stratocasters in much the same fashion. Once the artwork had been completed, a set of Fender Custom Shop Fat 50’s pickups were installed to give the guitar that stunning, bluesy tone (for which Mayer has become well known) and thusly, Mayer’s first “Crashocaster” came into being.
So pleased with the outcome of this first dynamic street-art guitar, Mayer asked “Crash” to finish another Stratocaster for him, “Crash 2”, a very different guitar indeed. Far more linear and ‘comic book’ based than the previous guitar, Mayer’s second “Crashocaster” was finished in a monochrome artwork that has made it instantly recognisable and a real show-stopper. One of Mayer’s favoured studio guitars, this second guitar has not made many public appearances since it was produced, staying very close to Mayer’s heart after helping “Crash” to design the actual artwork pattern.
