THE JOHN MAYER Tribute Stratocaster

History

Guitarist John Mayer was born and raise in Fairfield, Connecticut, attending the Berklee College of Music in Boston before perfecting his skills and releasing a number of successful studio albums such as “Room for Squares” and slowly but surely delved into more solid blues influences, forming The John Mayer Trio and collaborating with artists such as B. B. King and Eric Clapton.
Mayer has been known for his humble ability to honour his own influences, rather than himself, commonly seen playing his Jimi Hendrix Monterey Pop Festival Stratocaster on stage. His Black Fender Stratocaster is no exception to this respect for his peers, modelled on Stevie Ray Vaughan’s Number One Stratocaster, an icon of musical history in its own right, the guitar was also known affectionately as Stevie's "First Wife". Mayer, influenced by SRV’s style, had a custom made tribute to this classic guitar produced but to slightly different specifications, crafted using a black body instead of sunburst and featuring a slightly less defined or ‘accurate’ SRV relic pattern.
The guitar still featured worn gold hardware but Mayer dispensed with the left-handed bridge modifications, the black scratchplate, stickers and engraving seen of Stevie’s original guitar. Instead, Mayer chose to upgrade the original Kluson button machineheads with gold locking machines with pearl heads. The 60’s mint green scratchplate and equipment remained as standard and thusly, Mayer created a homage to one of the guitar greats, something respectful but individual, something ‘SRV@ but intimately Mayer.
